Perrotta, R.G.; Lasta, C.A.; Aubone, A..
The data belong to the demersal fishery research cruise H-13/94. Stratification used for research surveys from the catches values was tested, both for the northern area, Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) located between 34° and 39°S, and the southern area situated between 38°30' and 41°30'S (El Rincón, Buenos Aires Prov., Argentina). The variables considered were: croaker and striped weak fish densities and depth. Discriminant factor analysis indicates the formation of two and six strata for the southern and northern areas respectively. The adequate confidential limits of the estimated biomass for each strata obtained for different species, indicate that the criteria for stratification is satisfactory. The number of catches by strata was...

OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Cordo, H.D.; Hansen, J.E.; Cassia, M.C..
The current status of southern blue whiting Micromesistius australis stock is described. A single, closed fish population is assumed to inhabit the SW Atlantic. Based on catch data corresponding to years 1987-1997, a sequential analysis on the stock is carried out (Cohort Analysis). Under an adaptative framework, catch per unit of effort data from commercial vessels are used to fit the model. Two commercial fleets are used in the fitting, i.e. Polish vessels (1987-1994)and Argentine surimi factory vessels (1991-1997). Results indicate that both, total stock biomass and spawning stock biomass would have declined. Total biomass would have decreased from a maximum close to 1.4 million tons in 1990 down to 0.5 mt in 1997 whereas the current spawning stock...

Ehrhardt, N.M.; Prenski, L.B..
Long-tail hake, Macruronus magellanicus, is an important species in the Argentinean southern demersal species complex. Significant development of these fisheries since 1987 is indicative of the need to assess the hoki resource and for this purpose knowledge about some of the fundamental population parameters, such as natural mortality rate, is required. Knowledge on the natural mortality rate is an important element for the quantification of the resilience of the stock to fishery exploitatuib. In this study an algorithm for estimating natural mortality of hoki is developed which is based on information on abundance at age obtained from area swept methods and from age composition in the landings. As a result, natural mortality rates for ages 5 to 9 ranged...

342 specimens of sparid Calamus brachysomus ”Palma”, collected during a demersal trawl survey by the R. V. Tohallí in April and May1983, were examined. The different techniques used to prepare scales and otoliths for ageing are described and analysed. The otoliths were determined to be the most reliable for ageing studies; 87% of otoliths were readable. The rings observed were assumed to be annual. The mean lengths at age were used to determine the parameters of the Von Bertalanffy growth formula, giving: Lt=50.13(1-e-0.1473(t+2.0704)). The growth curve obtained must be considered provisional due to possible biases in the interpretation of the otoliths, and also due to those arising from the selectivity of the fishing gear.

OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Cordo, H.D.; Cassia, M.C.; Hansen, J.E..
Taking into account the commercial catches by the Argentine fleet and other fleets that operated around Malvinas Islands (SW Atlantic) in the 1987-1999 period, the current state of southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis) is assessed. A sequential analysis (Cohort Analysis) tuned, in an ADAPT conceptual framework with six independent indices of abundance, was performed for the southern blue whiting stock of the SW Atlantic. Commercial catch data of the Argentinian fleet and other fleets that operate around Malvinas Islands were used. The indices included catch per unit of effort of different fleets and data from Argentine-British research surveys. The analysis showed that the decreasing trend in biomass observed in previous studies went on during...

Wöhler, O.C.; Hansen, J.E.; Giussi, A.R.; Cordo, H.D..
Period 1985-2001. A stock assessment of Patagonian hoki of the Southwest Atlantic was carried out by using data from the years 1985-2001. A cohort analysis, fitted with some survey abundance indices was used in an adaptive conceptual framework. Simulation trials were performed to project the evolution of the fishery, to evaluate the risk of over-fish the stock under different exploitation levels, and to estimate Biologically Acceptable Catches (BAC). Both total biomass and spawning stock biomass showed increasing trends resulting from four strong year classes (1993, 1995, 1996 and 1998). Total biomass at the beginning of 2001 was estimated to be 2.5 million tons, and spawning stock biomass at the spawning time (August) was estimated to be around 1.28...

OceanDocs
Prenski, L.B.; Ehrhardt, N.M.; Legault, C..
Hoki, Macruronus magellanicus, is an important resource in the Argentinean multispecific southern demersal fishery. The species is distributed South of 46°S between the 50 and 200 meter isobaths. Thesouthern demersal fishery was almost nil prior to 1987, becoming more relevant toward the end of the 1980's. International fleets operating through several fishery agreement were those of the ex-Soviet Union,Bulgaria and Japan. Research on the abundance of hoki resources were initiated in the early 1970's; however, fishery research have been noticeably enhanced since 1992. In this study existing information on the Argentinean hoki fishery is integrated and an assessment of the status of exploitation of the species is carried out.As a result of the analyses, a...

Evaluación pesquera del bacalao austral (Salilota australis) del Atlántico Sudoccidental OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Cassia, M.C.; Hansen, J.E..
Information about the austral cod Salilota australis caught in the Patagonian shelf including the area around Malvinas Islands (SW Atlantic)as well as some data from annual research surveys carried out as of 1992 to 1998 were analyzed. On this basis, the fishery was studied and the abundance of the stock inhabiting the area under Argentine control was estimated. To calculate the optimum yield as a function of both age-at-first catch and fishing mortality, the Yield-per-Recruit model was used. Some biological reference points were also identified and an exploitation strategy based on low risk of collapse recommended. Austral cod landings, although small, showed an increasing trend as of 1990 that reached a maximum of 14,900 tons in 1998. Most of the catches...
